“The Entertainer” is a classical rag for piano composed by Scott Joplin in 1902. In the 1970s, during the time of ragtime music revival it came back to prominence as the theme music of the film “The Sting” in 1973 (Oscar-winning). The sub-title of the piece is “A Rag Time Two Step”, which refers to the form of a popular dance that was common at the peak of the ragtime popularity until 1911. “The Entertainer” was featured on Joshua Rifkin’s recording “Scott Joplin: Piano Rags” released in 1970. And Marvin Hamlisch's version of the rag got to Billboard pop chart’s #3 in 1974.

Scott Joplin wurde vermutlich 1867 oder 1868 in Texas geboren, er war der Sohn eines ehemaligen Sklaven. Mit 7 Jahren bekam er Klavierunterricht bei Julius Weiss, 15 trat er bereits als Bar-Pianist in Texas und in Lousiana auf. Und 1893 trat er sogar bei der Weltausstellung in Chicago auf.
Die meisten seiner Kompositionen entstanden nach 1895, die er zunächst für seine Gruppe "The Texas Medley Quartett" komponierte.
Scott Joplin gehört neben James Scott und Joseph Lamb zu den "Big Three" des klassischen Ragtimes. Joplin komponierte über 80 Ragtimes.
Joplin's Ragtimes sind sehr, sehr schwer zu spielen, denn sie wurden häufig für die Klavierrolle arrangiert und editiert. Die Edition Emma hat sich deshalb entschieden, von einigen der Joplin's Ragtimes nach und nach vier Versionen unterschiedlicher Spielschwierigkeit zu editieren:

Bereits im Alter von 15 Jahren war Joplin als Kneipen-Pianist in Texas und in Lousiana unterwegs. Von 1885 bis 1893 lebte Scott Joplin als Musiker in St. Louis, wo er in den Honky-Tonks und in den Saloons auftrat.
Ab 1895 entstanden die meisten seiner Kompositionen, die er als Einzelwerke erfolgreich verkaufen konnte.
Seine Klavierwerke sind sehr, sehr schwer zu spielen, weil sie meist für Klavierrollen komponiert und editiert wurden.
Die Edition Emma hat sich deshalb entschlossen, von diesen berühmten Ragtimes nach und nach 4 Versionen zu entwickeln und zu veröffentlichen:
